DEFENCE PRECAUTIONS

ACTIVITY OF CITY COUNCIL

Employees of the Invercargill City Council were extensively engaged during December and January digging trenches in reserves and sections as part of the defence precautions. Referring to the work the city engineer (Mr F. M. Corkill) in his report to the council stated: — “A great deal of work has been done on emergency preparations, all hands except those who could not be spared from their ordinary jobs being used on the digging of public shelter trenches. This actually did not involve much dislocation of ordinary work as the streets sealing had ceased for lack of bitumen, and jobs like kerbing were temporarily shut down. All buildings of this department, as v/ell as some others of the council’s properties, were screened for blackout purposes. All this work was regarded as so urgent that annual holidays have not been given, and partial staff has been on duty.”
