HIGH STANDARD OF DANCING

COMPETITION CONCLUDED A high standard of dancing, in spite of the comparatively small number or entries, was a feature of the Invercargill Dancing Competitions Society s competitions, which were completed in the Victoria Concert Chamber last night. They began on Saturday afternoon at the grand Christmas carnival at the show grounds. The opinion that the dancing generally was of a high standard was expressed by the judge (Miss M. Hillis, Thornbury). There had been a noticeable improvement in the standard of the under 14 classes, said Miss Hillis. She considered that the most prominent of the competitors were Master Jack Miller (Dunedin), who gained the highest points in any one section (91), in the Irish Jig under 18, and Miss B. Smith. Miss Smith was most impressive in her interpretation of the Sword Dance under 14, said Miss Hillis. The superintendent of the competitions, Mr J. Robinson, who presented the trophies, said that had it not been for the war the entries would certainly have been much larger. He thanked the competitors for their support and parents and those interested for their attendance.
