LUMSDEN

HOME GUARD A parade of the Lumsden-Tc Anau Company of the Home Guard was held at Mossburn on Saturday. LieutenantColonel E. F. Selby, group director, Major Johnson, battalion commander, and Captain Patterson were present. The morning was devoted to platoon and company drill and in the afternoon demonstrations of wiring, musketry, bombing and demolition work were given by various platoons. A practice attack by platoons concluded a useful day’s work. SCHOOL BREAK-UP The school pupils were given a free matinee at the pictures instead of the usual function. The afternoon was enjoyed by all, ice creams we/e handed round, no prizes were given’’ and the amount saved is to be set aside as the nucleus of a fund to put in a learners’ swimming pool. Mr L. B. Galbraith, the head teacher, thanked the committee for its cooperation during the year. The chairman of the committee, the Rev. B. O. Plumb, congratulated the staff on the splendid year’s work and said the Bible in schools which had been introduced during the year had proved very satisfactory. The pupils are having a monster bottle drive after- the holidays in support of the swimming pool fund.

TEACHER BIDDEN FAREWELL Mr A. Dykes, who has been teaching at the Lumsden school for the past year, was bidden farewell by the pupils and staff. Mr L. B. Galbraith, the head teacher, spoke in appreciation of Mr Dykes’s work and Lester Tomlin, on behalf of the pupils, presented him with a writing compendium and safety razor. ALL SAINTS SUNDAY SCHOOL The Sunday school children finished the year with a children’s service in the church. The Rev. B. O. Plumb addressed the children and presented the prizes. Afterwards they were entertained at a party given by Mrs Plumb and the teachers. SOCIAL EVENING A happy evening was spent recently by the members of the Lumsden singing class. An opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr L. A. Dykes, who had been an enthusiastic member and he was presented with a book on behalf of the members by the Rev. D. Ducan. A presentation was also made by Mrs A. L. Upchurch to Mrs E. R. Latham in recognition of her work during the year, and to Mrs L. Reidy by Mrs Clark, who expressed thanks on behalf of the class for her hospitality.
