TUATAPERE

SCHOOL BREAK-UP

About 60 parents and friends attended the Tuatapere school break-up which, because of the bad weather, was held in the boxing hall instead of the school grounds. The usual sports programme could not be held, but a short musical programme was offered instead. Tire chairman of the school committee, Mr B. Brookes, presented a book to every child in the infant room and in Std. 1, and certificates to the first three in the other classes, while the dux of the school, Valmai Harrison, received a gold medal. He also apologized for the absence of Mrs McDonald, who has presented the prizes for many years and has attended the break-up for 27 years.

The honours was as follows:— Dux, Valmai Harrison. Form 2: Valmai Harrison 1, Rex Henderson 2, Keith Hibbs 3. Form 1: Raymond Egerton 1, John Harper 2, Frank Edgerton 3. Std. 4: William Walker and Blake Harper equal 1, Hugh Walker 2, Elvin Hibbs 3. Std. 3: Kelman Sim 1, Nola King 2, Jim Rodgers 3. Std. 2: Norma Watson 1, Heather McDonald 2, Merle Brumby 3. Std. 1: Betty Crawford 1, Ray Souness and Ellen Matheson equal 2, Robert Neas 3. Primers: Arthur Tyndall 1, lan Ballantyne 2, Margaret Harper and Audrey Harrison equal 3. Dyer Trust prizes: Girls, Marion Neas; boys, Joe Edgerton. Primary school certificates: Leslie Cook, Nancy Faulkner, Valmai Harrison, Rex Henderson, Keith Hibbs, Isabel McClymont, Bruce McDonald, Ngarita McLeod, Arthur Sage, Raymond Tyndall. During the day presentations were made to two members of the staff. Miss Enid Gregory, who has been probationary assistant for the past year, was made a presentation on behalf of Stds. 1 and 2 and the staff by Merle Brumby. Mr J. A. Forde, who will be leaving on military service shortly, received a presentation from the senior pupils, the speakers being Valmai Harrison and Leslie Cook (Forms 1 and 2 room), Lola Acker and Pat Lee (Stds. 3 and 4 room). RED CROSS SOCIETY

The Tuatapere branch of the Red Cross Society held its monthly shop day on Friday. A special effort was made for Christmas and the record sum of £lB was taken. The winners of competitions were Mrs E. L. Tyndall (dinner) and Mr W. R. Langmuir (ham). A general meeting of the branch is to be held on Tuesday, January 6, when it is hoped to have a full attendance.
