COLLECTION OF BOBBY CALVES
INCREASE SHOWN ON LAST SEASON During the season ended on Monday 33,079 calves were collected in Southland for the bobby calf pool, compared with 29,778 calves last season, an increase of 3301. The season began on September 4 and the last collection was made on Monday. Of the total for the season only 825 calves were either rejected or under weight. It is estimated that when the accounts are completed the farmer will receive at least 10/- a head for his calves. This is considered a satisfactory figure and has been brought about by the good prices ruling for calfskins. Cash payouts to farmers have been made at the office of the South Island Dairy Association in Invercargill, but after today payment snot claimed will be remitted by post to farmers. This season bobby veal was not required by the British Government and none was exported. As compensation, the Government made a grant of 2/- a head on all calves supplied. The increased collection of bobby calves wil lassure an adequate supply of rennet foi- the cheese industry. The veils of the calves are dried and sent to the New Zealand Rennet Company and are used in the manufacture of rennet.
