LUMSDEN A successful ball was organized by the young people’s committee in the R.S.A. hall, and a substantial amount was raised for patriotic funds. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss A. Sherriff, and a lucky spot dance by Miss Wingfield and Mr A. Dykes. Mr I. Smith was master of ceremonies, the music being supplied by Tomlin brothers.
The quarterly meeting of the Plunket Society was held this week, when Mrs John Marshall presided over a good attendance. Delegates were present from Balfom-, Mossburn, Dipton, Athol and Queenstown. Miss Shand gave a report of the recent conference. Arrangements were made for the bring-and-buy day which was held on Wednesday. The stall-holders were: Produce stall, Mesdames J. Marshall, B. O. Plumb, and W. Mcnlove; tea-rooms, Mesdames Heath, Daly and Smith: competitions, Mrs A. Henderson; children’s stall, Mrs A.S. Upchurch. Mrs Marshall, the president, thanked the public for their support. A children’s party will be held on Friday, November 28. Competition winners at the bring-and-buy sale were:— Cross-stitch stool, Mrs A. McAlister; candle lighting, Mrs A. Henderson; girl’s name competition, Mrs H. Hazlett.
The monthly meeting of the women’s patriotic committee was held when Mr Maitland presided. The October street day was again successful and arrangements were made for the stalls for the next three months. Several members stated they had received letters from soldiers who had received parcels from this committee.
