SHORTAGE OF BEDS

MATERNITY CASES IN CITY

In common with other parts of Southland, a shortage exists in Invercargill of beds for maternity cases. With the prospect of two maternity homes in Invercargill closing early next year, the shortage is likely to become more acute. Insufficient accommodation and staff difficulties have resulted in some cases being refused. Other homes are booked up until next June. As yet no maternity cases have been turned away from St. Helens Hospital, where the extra staff engaged has been fully occupied. As in the case of pri-vately-conducted hospitals, there has been a steady increase in the number of women who come in from the country districts for periods of confinement. In earlier years many of these cases were taken in their own homes.
