ROADS IN GOOD ORDER

Loosening Likely In Dry Weather

“The gravel road surfaces generally in the county are reasonably good, but there is a danger of the gravel surfaces loosening as the weather becomes drier,” stated the report submitted to the Southland County Council at its meeting yesterday by the county engineer (Mr G. R. Milward). “Instructions have been issued, however, for additional clay blinding to be added to the surfaces wherever the looseness of the gravel is likely to become a danger to traffic.”

The Mataura river bridge, Wyndham, was well advanced, six of the nine spans having been completed, with the exception of the parapet. If the present rate of progress could be maintained, the work should be completed in February. The contractor for the approach fillings had also made a start. OTEPUNI BRIDGE FINISHED The Otenuni stream bridge, Inglewood road, had been completed, together with the approaches and the gravelling. McCrostie’s culvert, Spar Bush-Bay road, had been completed and passed. The Makarewa stream ■idge, Lora Gorge road, was constructed and had been passed. The approach work for the road deviation had still to be done, and this would be commenced shortly. The approaches for the Otamita stream bridge, Mandeville-Retreat road, had been completed and passed. The culvert near Crighton road on the KenningtonWaikawa highway had also been completed and passed. The of the Winton-Gore highway, Hedgehope to Waitane, was completed and passed. A start was made with the construction of Mclntosh road, Glencoe. The gravelling of Forbes road, Lochiel, was begun. Gray’s road deviation, Hokonui, was completed but has not yet been passed. Rock cutting, Northcoat road, Garston, was completed and passed, also the stopbank on the Parawa-Nokomai road above the Stoney Torr 1 bridge.

The contractor for the Waimumu channel had made good progress, except for a slight interruption due to the channel carrying too much water after heavy rain. One side of the channel for half the length had been completed, and the contractor was now engaged on widening work below Burton road, and the deviation of the stream on part of this' section. All the current maintenance contracts had made good progress, added the report.
