STOCK MARKET REVIEW

DOWNWARD TREND IN PRICES The seasonal decline iii prices for fat cattle and sheep was continued at Lomeville this week. It was notable that values for prime bullocks and good quality wethers showed little reduction, but the poorer qualities in both sections fell fairly sharply. At this time of the year cow beef and ewe mutton are less in demand and the downward trend of the markets is more noticeable in those classes. The quality of the fat cattle market at Lorneville was not as good as at recent markets, the bulk of the entry consisting of unfinished cows. Medium bullocks were only slightly easier than at the previous sale, but cows and heifers dropped in value by at least £l/5/- a head, the poorer sorts falling even more sharply. There was a similar trend in the Burnside market. No comparison with Addington is possible this week as no sale was held during Cup Carnival Week. The local range of prices was as follows:—Prime quality mediumweight bullocks from £l5/10/- to £l6/10/-; handyweights £l3/15/- to £l4/10/-; lightweights £ll to £l2; good quality handyweight heifers £lO/5/- to £11; lightweights £9 to £9/10/-; small £8 to £B/10/-; prime heavy cows up to £ll/10/-; good quality £9/10/- to £lO 10/-; medium £7 to £8; inferior £4 10/- to £5/10/-.

The large entry of fat sheep included a fair percentage of good quality wethers, but the majority of the ewes were in poor condition. Prices for wethers were unchanged, but all classes of ewes showed an average drop of 5/a head. Prime young wethers and hoggets were slightly firmer at Burnside, but other classes sold at rates similar to last week. The Lorneville range of prices was as follows:—Good woolly wethers from 33/- to 34/3; medium 32/- to 33/-; light and unfinished 29/to 30/-. Prime shorn wethers fetched 26/- to 27/-; good quality 24/9 to 25/6; medium 23/3 to 24/-; prime young woolly ewes up to 21/3; good quality 18/6 to 19/6; medium 15/6 to 16/6; aged and inferior 12/- to 13/6; prime young shorn ewes to 14/6; good quality 12/to 13/-; aged 10/- to 11/-; inferior 8/6 to 9/6.
