ELECTRICAL TRADE

TRAINING OF APPRENTICES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 13. During a recent hearing by the Apprentices Committee of the Industrial Emergency Council, dissatisfaction with the progress of apprentices in the electrical trade was discussed and it was decided to hold a conference of interested bodies with a view to discussing the position. This conference was held recently in Wellington, when it was decided that boys should have at least two years’ post-primary education before apprenticeship to the electrical trade. It was also decided that employers should be required to forward half-yearly reports to the district registrar of apprentices on the boys’ progress and that half-yearly reports should also be provided by the technical school authorities.

The conference expressed the opinion that attendance at technical schools or other approved institutions should be made compulsory for apprentices. The conference also endorsed the principle of daylight technical training during working hours, but in view of the wartime conditions it was suggested that apprentices should attend technical classes on Saturday mornings and should be paid for such attendances.
