WELCOME HOME TO SOLDIERS
FUNCTION AT WINTON Despite the unfavourable weather, there was a large attendance at the welcome home social at Winton to two Winton returned men, Gunner W. T. Egerton and Private E. G. Herriot. The Mayor, Mr Neil Metzger, presided, and welcomed the men back home on behalf of the citizens of Winton. He referred to the seriousness of war conditions at present and said that the Winton people, along with the rest of the Empire, were confident of a successful issue. In making a presentation to both men, Mr Metzger expressed the hope that the war would soon' be over and that all members of the New Zealand Forces would soon be welcomed back. The presentations were accompanied with musical honours. Mr C. F. Grimwood, president of the Winton Returned Soldiers’ Sub-As-sociation, and the Rev. John Newlands, on behalf of the Winton Patriotic Association, also spoke. Dancing occupied the major portion of the evening. Items were given by Mrs G. L. Smart, Miss I. Deegan and. Mr W. Forde.
