BALFOUR
CALEDONIAN SOCIETY The annual report of the Balfour and Longridge Caledonian Society states that the annual sports of the society were held on Boxing Day. There was a drop in the gate receipts compared with the previous year, this probably being due to the petrol restrictions. During the year a donation of £lO was made to the Red Cross Committee. The balance-sheet shows a loss of 7/8 in the sports account and a debit of £3/6/7 in the grounds account. A careful check was kept on all expenditure during the year. The grounds and buildings are in a good state of repair. Since the last annual meeting of the society one of the most enthusiastic members, Mr J. N. Alexander, left the district to live in Timaru. Before their departure Mr and Mrs Alexander were presented with tokens of esteem from members of the society. Many of the competitors of the last few years are now on active service and to them the society extends its best wishes for a speedy return. To the parents of those who have made the supreme sacrifice it extends its deepest sympathy. FAREWELL COMMITTEE A general meeting of the Soldiers’ Farewell Committee was held in the Balfour Hall. Mr E. W. Stevens presided; The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Witting wishing him a speedy and complete recovery. The following arrangements were made for the next function: Speakers, ladies’ committee to arrange for its own speaker; men, Messrs J. R. Keown and R. Gillespie; doorkeepers, Messrs J. Hood and G. McCaldon; ticket-seller, Mr G. Gillespie, master of ceremonies, Mr A. Liddell. The supper arrangements were left to the ladies’ committee to arrange.
