WESTERN SUB-ASSOCIATION Mr P. Grant presided over the following delegates at the annual meeting of the Western District Tennnis SubAssociation at Otautau: Messrs A. D. McClymont and A. Higgins (Tuatapere), A. T. Baird and A. Harrington (Otautau) and A. Dixon (secretary, Nightcaps). . . , In reporting on the year’s activities the chairman said that the Otautau Club was to be congratulated on winning the A grade competition after a keen and fairly even match with Tuatapere. Unfortunately the B grade competition was not completed because of the difficulty of securing players. The Western representative team did remarkably well and several young players had acquitted themselves creditably. In the match against Northern . at Riversdale for the Hamilton Shield, Western annexed the trophy by 13 sets to 11, and also managed to stave off a challenge by Central, thereby retaining the shield. Considering there was a war they had had a fairly successful season. The Labour Day tournament had been a success, and although one set was unfinished the tennis was of a high order.
The following officers were elected:— President, Mr P. Grant; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. T. Baird, A. Harrington, A. D. McClymont and A. Higgins; secretary, Mr A. Dixon; selectors, Messrs P. Grant, A. Harrington and A. T. Baird; delegate to Southland Lawn Tennis Association, Mr A. T. Baird; auditor, Mr A. J. Brown; handicappers for tournament, Messrs P. Grant, A. T. Baird and A. Harrington. It was resolved to hold an open tournament at Otautau on Labour Day, entries to close on Wednesday, October 22. It was decided that the Western District competitions begin on Saturday, November 1, and a resolution was carried that any team unable to fulfil the fixtures on the due date forfeit the match. Entries were received from Nightcaps, Tuatapere and Otautau. It was resolved to run an A grade competition only. A minute of appreciation was recorded of the services given to the association and the district by Mr G. Higgins.
