OPENING OF SUMMER SPORTS CLUBS TENNIS, CRICKET AND CROQUET Several Gore summer sports clubs, tennis, cricket and croquet, held their official openings on Saturday afternoon. Several showers of rain fell during the morning and although no rain fell during the afternoon conditions were not pleasant. Because of this the attendances at the tennis and cricket openings were not good. A big crowd attended the opening of the Gore Croquet Club. TENNIS It was not possible to conduct the usual Yankee tournament at the opening of the Gore Tennis Club because of the small attendance of members and visitors. However, several enjoyable games were played on the club’s courts during the afternoon. The president of the club (Mr F. J. Townsend) officially declared the season open and expressed the hope that members would support the club during what would no doubt be another difficult year. There was also only a small attendance at the opening of the Anglican Tennis Club and it was not possible to conduct a tournament. Friendly games were played on the courts during the afternoon. The president (the Rev. W. W. Powell) officially declared the courts open for play, and said he hoped the club would enjoy a successful season.
