ASSOCIATED CHAMBERS’ CONFERENCE
Sir, —In The Southland Times of October 4 I read that at a meeting the previous day the Southland County Council had received a letter from the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce “asking for a donation to enable the chamber to entertain the delegates to the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of New Zealand to be held in Invercargill on November 5 and 6. About £lOO would be required for this purpose. It was decided to make a donation of £3/3/-.” Now the Chambers of Commerce are nothing less than a union of big business, yet a public body is making a donation of public monies to this organization to enable it to entertain its delegates. Evidently it is quite legal for the Southland County Council to make such a donation to big business unions, but imagine the outcry if trade unions were to receive public monies to entertain their delegates. The first ones to protest would be the chambers of commerce, and rightly so, too, because the entertaining of delegates, be they Chamber of Commerce, trade union or Farmers’ Union, is the concern of a particular organization and the public generally should not be expected to foot the bill. DONATION.
