ENTERTAINMENTS FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS

FORTHCOMING FUNCTIONS

Various functions in aid of the patriotic funds will be held in Invercargill in the near future. The first of these will be the variety entertainment to be held in the Civic Theatre tomorrow evening. Items will be given by the Middle school choir, the Orphans’ Club orchestra, and a gymnastic display by classes of the Invercargill Y.M.C.A. On or about October 6 a display of pictures, which have been donated by the New Zealand Society of Artists to the National Patriotic Fund Board for exhibition in the various centres, will be on view in the Victoria Concert Chamber. A small admission fee will be charged. Mr R. H. Parker will be in charge of the hanging of the pictures, some of which will be raffled for patriotic funds During the same period a piece of beautiful tapestry will be on display in a window of H. and J. Smith’s.

A presentation of the “Messiah” will be given in the Civic Theatre by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, on December 10, which is to be people’s day at the Southland Show. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) has been invited to attend. Among the 300 performers will be Miss Mary Pratt, of Dunedin, who will be the leading soloist. The accompaniment will be by a full orchestra and the conductor will be Mr J. Simpson, of Gore.

Appreciation of the fine gesture of many organizations in providing entertainments for patriotic funds was expressed yesterday by the entertainment organizer for the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council (Mr P. Linton Hodge). Mr Hodge said it was gratifying to note these patriotic gestures by organizations in the city and he was confident that the public would give the entertainments its full support.
