ITALIAN LINERS SUNK
ATTACK BY BRITISH SUBMARINES (8.0.W.) RUGBY, September 22. Further important successes have been gained by British submarines in the Mediterranean, where since the beginning of this month 19 Italian merchant vessels and troop carrying craft ranging from the 23,600-ton liner Duilio to larger schooners have been sunk. This successful action is announced in an Admiralty communique which says:— “On Thursday submarines of the Mediterranean Fleet on patrol in the Central Mediterranean successfully attacked a fast 'and heavily escorted Italian convoy carrying reinforcements to Libya. The convoy consisted of three liners. Two have been destroyed and it is probable that the third has been damaged. One of the liners in this convoy was similar to the Vulcania, of 24,469 tons and the other two were of approximately the same tonnage.”
