WINTON TROTTING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING There was an attendance of 44 members at the annual me’eting of the Winton Trotting Club. Mr W. G. Clark presided. The chairman referred to the death of Mr William Watson, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. In speaking to the report and bal-ance-sheet, Mr Clark said that the past year had proved very successful, but the outlook for the new season was less promising because of the war. The Juvenile Stakes had again proved successful, but he would like to see the race open. As a breeding centre Southland was still holding its own, and races of this kind helped to advertise the possibilities of Southlandbred horses. He expressed his thanks to the committee and members for their co-operation throughout the year. Mr Clark was re-elected president, and Messrs J. T. Darnill and R. A. Norman elected vice-presidents. For the six annual vacancies on the committee, nine nominations were received the ballot resulting in the election of Messrs H. Graham, S. McDowell, M. Forde, H. Earl, F. Boyle and J. Fowler. Mr A. P. Gerrard was elected to fill the extraordinary vacancy on the committee caused by the election of Mr R. A. Norman as a vice-president. Messrs D. Wildey and J. T. Shaw were appointed auditors. Fifteen new members were elected. At the conclusion of the meeting a social was held, items being given by Messrs W. Forde, F. Tilley, G. Lindsay, J. Duffy, M. Forde and H. Graham. Several toasts were honoured. GOLF QUEEN’S PARK LADIES’ CLUB The best cards returned in an L.G.U. match at Queen’s Park yesterday were: Silver Division: Mrs T. J. Dwyer, 91-17-74; Mrs D. K. Torrance, 96-18-78; Mrs J. T. Field, 88-9-79. Bronze Division: Mrs S. Keen, 106-31-75; Mrs M. Watt, 106-31-75; Mrs G. Caldwell, 108-30-78. INVERCARGILL LADIES’ CLUB The following is the draw for a sealed hole match to be played at Otatara at 1.15 p.m. tomorrow: — No. 1 Tee.—Mrs N. M. Smith v. Miss M. Stout; Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones v. Miss M. McCallum; Mrs F. M. Corkill v. Mrs O. G. Gilmour. No. 6 Tee.—Mrs S. R. Lowden v. Mrs A. C. Tansley; Mrs A. C. Ford v. Mrs H. T. Thompson. No. 11 Tee.—Mrs J. D. Strettell v. Miss D. Stout; Mrs R. C. Cook v. Mrs, A. H. Jensen; Mrs S. F. Williams v. Miss N. Jensen; Mrs C. C. Anderson a bye. GLADSTONE! TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD A successful season was recorded in the annual report of the Gladstone Tennis Club which was presented at the annual meeting. The president (Mr R. Lund) was in the chair, and there was a good attendance of members.
The report stated that in spite of patriotic activities and the demands of Home Guard training good use had been made of the club’s courts during the season. The report and balancesheet were adopted. Officers for the coming season were elected as follows: President, Mrs W. E. Hazlett; vice-presidents, Messrs R. C. Abernethy and H. J. Macalister; secretary, Miss Nancy Gilkison; treasurer, Mr D. Howarth; club captain, Mrs T. Wray Wilson; committee, all the preceding office-bearers, together with Mrs B. W. Hewat and Messrs C. R. Hart, W. F. Sturman, D. A. McDonald, G. C. Broughton and R. Lund. It was decided to record in the minutes the club’s appreciation of Mr Hart’s work as secretary during the past two years. Opening day was fixed for October 11, when a tournament will be held. MOANA CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Moana Tennis Club. The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, The Mayor, Mr J. R. Martin; president, Mr L. Smith; vicepresidents, Messrs J. P. Butler, J. Baird, G. Frobarth, F. Holloway, R. Dunwoodie and D. K. Torrance; honorary secretary and treasurer, Miss A. I. Brown; club captain, Mr F. Campbell; deputy-captain, Mr R. Millow; ladder secretary, Mr McCormack; auditor, Mr R. Dunwoodie; committee, Misses Dempster, Chapman and Weir, Messrs Sands, Fraser and Thompson, It was recommended that a C grade team be entered in the competition. The balance-sheet showed the club to be in a sound financial position.
Several new members were elected and the opening day was fixed for October 4.
