WINTON TROTTING CLUB
A SUCCESSFUL YEAR The club has experienced another very successful season, states the annual report of the Winton Trotting Club. The annual meeting was held during the Christmas holidays and proved a decided success in every way A satisfactory profit was made, the receipts for the past season comparing very favourably with those of the previous season. The totalizator returns of £14,727 were the highest for many years, while the gate' takings showed an increase of £9O, the sum of £422/12/6 being received. Members’ subscriptions were maintained at a satisfactory level, and nominations, acceptances and forfeits totalled £5ll, a decrease of £lO on the previous year, which was the highest for 18 years. The main items of expenditure are stakes £1345 and Government taxes £1546, an increase of £226 over 1939. The following nominations have been received: President, Mr W. G. Clark; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Norman and J. T. Damill; committee, Messrs J. T. Butler, F. Boyle, J. Blackman, J. Duffy, H. Earl, M. Forde, J. A. Fowler, H. Graham and S. McDowell. As the number of nominations for the committee exceeds the number required, an election will be necessary. SUN CASTLE WINS ST. LEGER LONDON, September 8. The St. Leger Stakes, the final of the big three-year-old classics in England, was run at Doncaster and resulted: ST. LEGER STAKES, a sweepstake with £4OOO added; 1J miles and 132 yards.—Lord Portal’s b c SUN CASTLE, by Hyperion—Castle Gay, by Buchan, 9.0 1; H. E. JOCKEY BREAKS LEG (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 10. The Trentham hurdle horseman, C. W. Burgess, received a broken leg in a fall during schooling operations this morning. He was taken to hospital. GOLF WINTON CLUB The draw for the first round of the Avon Trophy competition, to be played on the Winton golf links, is as follows: Miss I. Shand v. Miss G. Horner; Miss M. King v. Miss S. Norman; Mrs R. King v. Mrs G. King; Miss June Horner v. Miss I. Mclndoe. The four-ball bogey match played by the men resulted as follows: R. Wilson and R. Bretherton, 2 up; D. King and N. G. Pigou, 2 up; G. King and O. A. B. Smith, 1 up. Wilson and Bretherton won on the count back. In the final of the men’s junior championship, D. King defeated H. J. Lilico, 2 and 1. In the semi-final of the Graham King trophy competition G. King defeated O. Smith, 4 and 3, and in the final W. Geary defeated G. King, 4 and 3. The draw for a four-ball Stableford match to be played on Saturdy is as follows: D. King v. H. Lilico; N. Pigou v E. Pike; W. Geary v. F. Lindsay; G. King v. H. Ward; R. Bretherton v. J. Shaw; P. Boylen v. R. Wilson; W. Balch v. G. Lindsay; O. A. B. Smith v. W. Brandford; T. Hobbs v. H. Denny; J. Perrelle v. C. Hughes. MEN’S HOCKEY SIX-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT CANCELLED Because of the small number of entries, the Southland Men’s Hockey Association has decided to cancel the six-a-side tournament which was to have been held on Saturday. The final meeting of the association for the season will be held on Tuesday, September 23. BASKETBALL DRAW FOR SATURDAY Following is the draw for Saturday’s basketball matches:— First Grade.—Court 4,2 p.m., Rata A v. Woolworths (Miss Ingram; Miss L. Williamson). Rata a bye. All representative players are asked to return representative costumes on Saturday and trophy holders are asked to return trophies. GEORGETOWN TOURNAMENT A successful basketball knock-out tournament was held in the Georgetown hall. Although entries were few the games proved spectacular. In the women’s games Stuarts and Woolworths entered Die finals. C. Cleghorn played well at shoot for Woolworths, scoring many difficult shots. Stuarts had the better of the play towards the end of the game and ran out the winner. J. Naismith (defence) and I. Hagerty (shoot) played good games for the winner.
A great deal of excitement was produced in the men’s games. The Marist team, which is comprised of young players, mostly school boys, defeated Georgetown in the final. N. Forde played well at shoot, scoring difficult shots from well out. For Georgetown Jenkins played a spectacular game.
