RACING AND TROTTING
INVERCARGILL TROTS The programme for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s spring meeting on November 1 has been issued. The sum of £lf?0O in stakes to be distributed includes £250 for the Invercargill Trotting Cup (4.47 class), £l6O for the Members’ Handicap and £l5O for the Thomson Handicap. Nominations close on October 16. Wild Talk Wild Talk, the top weight in the Ashburton Handicap on Saturday, had her first run for a long time in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. She won the Timaru Cup with 8.8 in April 1940, her last success. Secret Flight Secret Flight, a non-acceptor in the Spring Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, was given 8.6 by the handicapper. A Smart Hurdler Several novice hurdlers are down to make their first appearance in a race over jumps at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. Ferriby is one of the novices at the game, but he already has contested a hurdles race. He has been doing good work in his schooling and he is certain to carry a lot of support on Saturday. W. F. Ellis for Ashburton W. F. Ellis, the Invercargill apprentice, will be riding at the Ashburton meeting. His mounts include The Raker, on whom he won the Kurow Cup and the Churchill Handicap last season, Scarteen and Solerity. Heavy Track at Auckland Torrential rain which fell at Epsom just after the first race last Saturday caused the track to become very heavy, and ante-post calculations in several instances were affected. Our McKinney, the winner, is a noted mudlark, and the conditions were all to his liking. Betty Boop, the favourite, broke twice during the running. Remembo’s Rider Mr W. T. Boyle, of Heddon Bush, rode Remembo in the Hunters’ Flat race at Wingatui on Saturday, not P. J. Boyle, jun.. The latter rode Merry Simon and Pride o’ Central. No Champions There is no outstanding horse in the 55 entrants for the New Zealand Cup, and if weights were declared today it is safe to say that there would be none handicapped above 9.0, the lowest figure permissible for the topweight, comments The Timaru Herald. Auckland “Incident”
There was a mild sensation at the finish of the August Handicap (won by Our McKinney) at the Auckland trots last Saturday. Just after the horses passed the post M. Stewart, driver of the favourite, Betty Boop, had an altercation with E. N. Kennerly, driver of Three Bells (third),. states The Auckland Star. As was expected the stewards noticed Stewart s action ond held an inquiry. The upshot was that Stewart was fined £lO for unseemly behaviour detrimental to the sport of trotting.” Scottish Dale
The Foxbridge filly Scottish Uale, who ran two thirds at the Grand National meeting, has since been doing well. She was third to Sir Gundi and Good Scout in the Cashmere Plate, and third to Arabian Night and Hunting Charm in the Aylesbury Handicap. New Zealand Cup
Rakanui and Islay Downs, who were successful at Awapuni and Wingatui respectively on Saturday, were the first New Zealand Cup candidates to win since nominations were taken last Friday. Handicaps for the Cup are due to be available on September 27. First For Two Years
Brigadier, a recent addition to W. R. Butts’s stable, scored his first win for over two years when he led the field home in the Belfast Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. Gleam, second, had every chance, but the favourite, Joan Conquest, which finished third, had a bad passage, and did well to finish where she did. Horses For Courses
Gladynev has won three times in successive starts at Awapuni. He succeeded in the Manawatu Winter Cup, in the Te Horo Handicap at the Hunt meeting, and in the Marangai Handicap at the Wanganui fixture. Wharemanea
The ten-year-old hurdler Wharemanea has been nominated for flat races at Avondale and also for the New Zealand Cup. He has not won a flat race and is not a topliner among the jumpers.
Conditions Suit Mankind The soft ground suited Mankind, which won the G. L. Berry Memorial Handicap at New Brighton comfortably after staving off a determined challenge from Mongolian, which was favourably placed throughout the contest. Mankind started smartly to take the lead at the end of a furlong and from there to the post was never headed. This marked his tenth win. He has also been eleven times second and seven times third, and has won £2415/10/- in stakes. Like most members of the Grattan Loyal family he has improved with age. While he has put up several brilliant showings under favourable conditions, he is better than most pacers in mud. English Bloodstock Imported Mr J. C. Fletcher, of Waikato, who was the under-bidder for the highpriced stallion Battle Song at the Orari dispersal sale, has since purchased the rising three-year-old Balloch, by Obliterate (by Tracery) from Cinna, dam of Beau Pere, Gay Shield, and Mr Standfast. Mr Fletcher does not intend to race Balloch in New Zealand but to use him lightly at the stud next season. Balloch will be accompanied on his trip to New Zealand by a number of highclass mares which have also been secured on behalf of Mr Fletcher. Several English mares arrived recently for Mr Fletcher.
