Dr C. C. Anderson returned to Invercargill by last night’s express from Wellington. He attended the Boy Scout commissioners’ conference at Lower Hutt during the week-end. Mr C. Bradfield, manager of the Southland branch of J. Rattray and Son, Ltd., returned to Invercargill by last night’s express after a short visit to Dunedin.
Mr G. E. T. Dorman, county commissioner for the Boy Scout movement, returned to Invercargill by last night’s express from Wellington after attending the Boy Scout Commissioners’ conference at Lower Hutt during the week-end.
Mr V. Raines is now in Christchurch where he is holding sittings on behalf of the No. 3 Transport Authority. Cr W. H. Boyes was appointed a member of the Reserves Committee of the City Council last night in place of Cr A. Scott, who asked to be relieved from the committee. Cr Scott was thanked for his services to the committee.
Mr F. M. Oldham has been elected chairman of directors of Kempthorne Prosser and Company’s New Zealand Drug Company, Ltd., consequent upon the death of Mr F. W. Mitchell, and Mr J. H. Meek has been invited to fill the vacancy on the board. Mr C. S. Dalgliesh, fields instructor for the Department of Agriculture at Rotorua, has retired after 40 years’ service. His successor is Mr C. R. Taylor (Whakatane). Lieutenant Colonel C. E. Hercus, D. 5.0., 0.8. E., has been appointed to command the Otago University Medical Company, N.Z.M.C. Major (temporary lieutenant-colonel) G. A. D. Iverach, M.C., relinquishes command of the company and is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, Southern Military District.
Paymaster Commander S. J. Wright, R.N., has arrived at Auckland from Britain to relieve Paymaster- Commander K. W. James as accounting officer at the Devonport Naval Base. Commander- Wright retired from the service in 1922, and is at present on loan from the British Admiralty for the duration of the war.
Mr David Kee, who will be remembered for his Church Army work in New Zealand, has been in charge of a Church Army mobile canteen in Eritrea and Abyssinia, and has since been appointed to take charge of a Church Army hut in Palestine. As a candidate in the interests of the Communist Party, Mr lan Jamieson has been nominated to contest the Dunedin South seat at the forthcoming General Election. Mr Jamieson, who was born in Edinburgh, came to New Zealand at the age of 13. He has been an active member of working class organizations since 1932, and has been a member of the Communist Party since 1935. Mr A. E. Dennis, engineer and technical adviser to the Department of Industries and Commerce, has been appointed general manager of Stevenson and Cook Ltd., engineers, Port Chalmers, and will leave Wellington shortly to take up his position. The firm is contractor to the Government for building 1 minesweepers. This will be the immediate main work Mr Dennis will direct, together with the planning and establishment of new modem works and foundry. While in the Government’s service, which he joined in 1938, Mr Dennis was in charge of the dismantling of the Port Bowen with which went the rehabilitation of the idle Kakariri freezing works. As a result of its success with the Port Bowen the Government decided to take over and break up the Mokoia at Port Chalmers and Mr Dennis will continue to direct these related, works and also supervise the recovery of steel plate from the pipe lines of the abandoned section of the Waipori hydro-electric scheme operated by the Dunedin City Council. Before joining the Government service, Mr Dennis was with Cory, Wright and Salmon, Wellington. Mr G. Gould, engineer with the Patent Slip Company, Wellington, has been appointed works manager to Stevenson and Cook.— (P.A.)
