NEW CROP FOR SOUTHLAND
MUSTARD FOR TABLE USE Ten acres of culinary mustard are to be grown in the Winton district during the coming, season. Six acres of the area will be sown in white mustard and the rest in brown mustard. The Department of Agriculture has been, requested to co-operate with an oldestablished English firm of mustard manufacturers which has opened a factory in Dunedin. It has been arranged that 120 acres of the crop will be grown in different parts of New Zealand, there being 10 acres in each locality. Winton and Mandeville are the only two areas in Southland. The department has arranged a contract with a Winton farmer for the crop and will provide advice in growing the mustard. The manufacturers will provide the seed and will guarantee a minimum payment for the crop of £8 an acre in the South Island, subject to the grower exercising reasonable care and attention. Particular care will be required at harvesting and threshing time to prevent mixing of the varieties.
The brown mustard will be sown in September and the white in October. Tire former crop requires a deep, moist, well-drained and fertile soil free from acidity, but the white variety is adapted to a wider range of conditions and will grow in almost any locality where turnips will succeed.
