WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The following councillors were present at tire monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council at Otautau: Messrs Alex. Roy (chairman), E. K. Sim, B. C. Horrell, D. D. Macdonald, C. J. Speight, A. Gould, H. G. Pinckney, D. Teviotdale and W. B. Hopcroft. ’A report was received from Macalister Bros., about dwellings at the Rocks, and it was resolved that they be instructed to notify owners that all unathorized buildings must be removed. Messrs Farquhar McKay and six others, Gummies Bush, petitioned the council to have the creek running through Messrs McKay’s, Hamlin’s and Malloy’s properties widened and deepened by the excavator. It was decided to obtain costs for the work. A resolution was carried that the council was prepared to encourage ratepayers to fence portions of the road, where necessary, to eradicate gorse and noxious weeds, and also that ratepayers be allowed to purchase any land wh ;re so desired. Mr W. G. Pearce, resident engineer, Public Works Department, wrote about the proposed tar sealing at the factory at Tuatapere, and stated that if he was supplied with an estimate for sealing the roadway from the bridge end tc a point 10 chains west of the factory, a distance of approximately 13 chains he would ask the Main Highways Board to provide for this if at all possible, as it had always been sympathetic towards the abatement of the dust nuisance. The county engineer, Mr J. G. C. Baker, reported that the road would have to be reconstructed and it was decided to accept the rccomrpendation of the Public Works engineer.

Messrs N. B. Sim and A. R. Sim, Pukemaori, wrote stating that they had been in communication with the Hon. Adam Hamilton with a view to getting a Government subsidy for a bridge over the Orawia river to give access to their sections; They had been advised to ask the council to include an application for this bridge in the list of applications for public grants this year, and they requested that this lie done It was decided to grant the request. ENGINEER’S REPORT The engineer, Mr Baker, submitted the following report: Since last meeting the weather has been good, and this, coupled with the fairly extensive amount of fine top-dressing put out during the last two months, has resulted in improved road surfaces, compared to the average, for this time of the year. With reference to the application of the Southland Electric Power Supply for permission to cut down trees growing on the south-west side of the county portion of Paddock street, Riverton, Cr Pinckney inspected and agreed that the trees be cut down except those fronting the properties occupied by Mr J. Crawford and by Mr E. J. Shaw, as both asked that the trees fronting their places be left for shelter and offered to keep them topped to the satisfaction of the Electrical Supply authority. With reference to Mr F. McKay’s letter advocating the deepening and widening of the creek through his and his neighbour’s properties at Gummies Bush, Ci. Hopcroft inspected the creek, and there is no doubt that quite a lot of good land would be greatly benefited improved drainage in this locality. It was decided that the deepening and widening work should start at Mr Malloy’s top boundary and should then continue up stream as far as required. Regarding Messrs M. and S. Mason’s application for a footpath on the west side of the boundary road at Mosley township, Cr. Speight inspected and decided to form and dross some six chains of footpath when the new motor grader comes to hand. The Nightcaps Town Board is to be asked to pay half the cost of the work. The small bridge on the Ohai-Orawia main highway and at the foot of Rannock Hill near the Sharpbridge road junction is in a dangerous condition, and is to be renewed in hardwood at once. The road will be closed for about 12 hours.
