PETROL RESTRICTIONS
I note from your paper that taxi I drivers are experiencing a shortage of ] petrol. As a private motorist getting on I coupons about one gallon a week I often have cause to ponder on the manner in which six or seven people living within about one quarter of a mile of my home obtain petrol. These people motor to and from work and motor home for lunch. Their coupons would not last them more than a fortnight as this gives a total of about 50 miles a week for each car. It is apparent that there are serious leakages in the present way in which licences are.granted, and I advise any taxi driver short of petrol to note the people who daily use their cars going to and from work. Cars are not used solely for this, however, but these people I know of manage to use their cars at week-ends and at nights. It is not a fair deal for the public and, if it is typical of Invercargill, there must be a considerable daily wastage. MORRIS.
