NEW ZEALAND AIRMEN DECORATED
LONDON, August 25. The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded Acting Flight-Lieutenant R. J. Vaughan, of the Royal Air Force. Flight-Lieutenant Vaughan is a New Zealander, whose mother lives in Hastings. The latest Royal Air Force list oi awards, published on Tuesday, contains the awards of five Distinguished Flying Crosses and five Distinguished Flying Medals, one of which goes to Sergeant George McElroy, of New Zealand. Acting Flight-Lieutenant Vaughan, is a son of Mrs M. Vaughan, Hastings. About a fortnight ago Mrs Vaughan received a letter from her son in which he briefly reported that he had been away from his station for about a month making history. For the last two winters he has been in charge of a Sunderland flying-boat crew. He was born at Wairoa 27 years ago and educated at the Gisborne High School and later at the Hastings High School. In 1938 he obtained a short service commission with the Royal Air ■ Force.— (Press Association.)
