STEWART ISLAND LARGE CATCHES OF FISH

After a comparatively fine spell the weather has again broken and the fishing boats have remained at anchor. Most of the men are thankful fo. the rest after the strenuous days they have had during the last three weeks. Most of them are suffering from extremely sore hands and bad poisonings. During the last three weeks some very large catches have been brought in, although the record month of last year has yet to be surpassed. Fishing has been carried on practically all round the island and the fine weather has allowed the boats to have a number of trips to the Traps. Because of the long distances that the boats have been going for the fish, considerable time has been lost departing and returning to the grounds which otherwise could have been avoided if the freezer at .Port Pegasus had been in operation.

HEAVY FROSTS Recently there have been some very heavy frosts. A large number of people are under the impression that Stewart Island does not get any frosts, but such is not the case. Some very heavy frosts have been recorded, with a white ..covering right to the water’s edge. Ice has formed on the decks of boats lying at anchor in the bay.
