OBITUARY

DR J. A.. COWIE

(P A ) MASTERTON, June 12. Dr James Alexander Cowie died suddenly last night. He was attending a meeting to select the National Party candidate at the general election and was ascending the stairs when he suddenly collapsed. He was born m 18 and lived in Masterton for about 30 years. He leaves a widow, one son and one daughter. He was a wellknown Freemason.

Dr Cowie was a son of the late Mr Andrew Cowie, of Otapiri. He attended the Limehills School and was at the Southland Boys’ High School in 1890 and 1891. He graduated B.A. and B.Sc. at the Otago University and then went to Glasgow, where he took his medical degrees. He returned to New Zealand and married Dr Helen Baird, daughter of the late Rev. James Baird, who was Presbyterian minister at Winton for many years, and a sister of Dr J. H. Baird, of Wyndham. He started in practice at Masterton about 30 years ago. Two brothers and two sisters live in Southland. They are Mesdames W. Rouse (Limehills) and G. Cowan (Drummond) and Messrs A. P. Cowie (Invercargill) and Henry Cowie (Otapiri). MR J. C. BURNS The death has occurred of Mr John Campbell Burns, of Petone, aged 62 years. He was one of four sons of Mr Andrew Burns, a well-known journalist who is still living in Wellington and is 95 years of age. Mr J. C. Burns was head master of the Petone West school for 11 years and was a member of the Borough Council and till the recent elections, at which he was defeated, he was acting Mayor for Mr George London, who is on service with the forces. He was treasurer of the New Zealand Educational Institute and was connected with numerous Petone activities. He was a former Wellington Rugby and cricket representative and was also a keen tennis and yachting man. MR DAN BEARD (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 12. The death has occurred of Mr Dan Beard, founder of the American Boy Scouts and a collaborator of Lord Baden-Powell.
