GORE NEWS

MORE THAN £5400 RAISED MONEY FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS A report submitted to a meeting of the Gore Patriotic Committee showed that the Gore collections to date totalled £5402/5/11, of which £971/2/10 had been received in 1941 on account of Gore’s contribution to the £1,000,000 All Purposes Appeal. It was pointed out that on a population basis Gore should provide a much larger sum, and various suggestions for future efforts were put forward. A decision was made that another meeting be held in a fortnight’s time to decide definitely what steps should be taken. It was also decided that the canvass of the business section of the town, with which good progress had been made, be left in the hands of the executive in the meantime.

The Gore Red Cross Society advised that Mrs T. L. Macdonald had been appointed to represent the society on the committee. The Southland Patriotic Council advised that the sick and wounded fund was closed, and that donations could no longer be accepted for that fund.

Mrs McCreath reported on behalf of the women’s committee that a further consignment of soldiers’ parcels had been completed since the last meeting. Members >f the committee expressed warm appreciation of the assistance received from many persons and institutions throughout the district who had given money and goods very freely. The support received in the parcels scheme was very pleasing. The case of a district resident recently discharged from the Army was considered, and it was decided to confer with the chairman of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council with a view to securing authority for a local committee to deal with applications for assistance.

The committee discussed the sections donated for the benefit of the patriotic funds, and it was decided to offer them for sale at once.
