OPEN SEASON FOR GAME

“SPREAD” SUGGESTED

A suggestion that instead of the shooting season being limited to 12 consecutive days it should be spread over six week-ends, was made by Mr H. Broad at the annual meeting of the Southland Acclimatization Society last night, but Mr D. Wishart, chairman of the game committee, said that he did not think there was any chance of getting that concession unless they could also get a new Minister of Internal Affairs.

Mr Wishart added that they had tried to get an open season of a month, but had got only two weeks. Personally he thought there were just as many ducks shot in a fortnight as there would be in a month, because with the shorter season the shooting was more intense. Mr S. M. Macalister (chairman): Two years ago we were pessimistic about getting any open season at all for game, and I think it would be wise not to ask for too much at present.
