NO REPRESENTATIVE ON HOSPITAL BOARD
SOUTH INVERCARGILL BOROUGH The opinion that the South Invercargill Borough should be represented on the Southland Hospital Board because the hospital was situated within the borough was expressed by the Mayor and councillors at a meeting of. the South Invercargill Borough Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr Owen Smith, said he was very disappointed at the small number of electors who voted at the recent election in the borough. Of the 600 electors only 60 persons registered their votes. Mr Smith said he was of the opinion that members of the board should be elected by direct representation and not by an election. He said he did not consider the present system a satisfactory one. Cr D. Harris: It is shameful that more persons in the borough did not register their votes. It is disgraceful. It is time something was done to make voting compulsory and then if electors still failed to vote a fine should be imposed.
The discussion arose when a letter was received from the town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman, advising the council of the official result of the elections for the Southland Hospital Board for the combined district of the city of Invercargill and the borough of South Invercargill.
