SOVIET AND IRAQ

Diplomatic Relations Established (Rec. 2.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 12. The Soviet’s official news agency, Tass, reveals that Russia has opened diplomatic relations with Iraq. Tass states that in 1940 the Iraqi Government asked Russia to open diplomatic relations, but made it a condition that the Soviet should issue a statement recognizing the independence of the Arab states including Iraq. The Soviet could not agree to this course. Iraq later made an unconditional request, which was acceded to by Russia.

EIGHT GERMAN PLANES DESTROYED

LONDON, May 12.

Eight German planes were destroyed in Sunday night’s raiding, four by night fighters and four by ground batteries.
