AERIAL BOMBARDMENT EXPECTED SWIFT WORK ON DEFENCES NICOSIA, May 4. The Governor, Mr W. D. Battershill, has advised all having no reason to remain in the towns to go immediately to the hills. Those remaining are advised to enlist. “It is now reasonable to expect that we will be subjected to aerial bombardment,” states the Governor. Cyprus is swiftly perfecting its defences. There are incessant movements of planes, warships and transports. Alexandria is also rushing on its precautions against air attack. The authorities are building shelters for 100,000 persons. Turkish planes and troops have moved into defensive positions in the Taurus Mountains. Refugees from Syria say that “German tourists” are continually pouring into Syria. The Syrian-Palestine border has been closed and the British arc perfecting the defences of Palestine.
