Probably because so many single men are on active, service there was not the usual Easter marriage rush in Invercargill this year. Last year Easter fell in March and the number of marriages in Invercargill that month was 65, whereas in March this year the number was only 21. Easter this year was in April, but the number of marriages in the city last month was 10 fewer than in April 1940. The number of marriages in the city during March and April 1941 was 50, compared with 104 in March and April 1940, or less than half.
In March this year there was a large increase in the number of births compared with the figures for thp corresponding month last year, 84 as against 49. The figures for last month show only a slight increase, 71 as against 69 for April 1940. There were two fewer deaths.
