RELICENSING OF VEHICLES
Period Extended To Thirteen Months
\ * The relicensing of motor-vehicles for the year 1941-42 will begin at the Chief Post Office and throughout Southland tomorrow. On this occasion the licensing will be for 13 months so that from 1942 onwards the year will end on June 30 instead of May 31 as previously. Tlie change is due to the heavy congestion at post offices in May because of the collection of the registration fee of 5/-, under the Social Security Act from both men and women, and the collection of Social Security charges on income other than salary or wages. Because of the new arrangement an extra month’s fees will be payable, and in the case of private cars the cost will be £2/3/4 for relicensing, 2/- for plates and £l/8/2 for Class 4 insurance, making a total of £3/13/6 for the 13 months instead of £3/8/- for 12 months.
The new plates have white figures on a black background, and the plate numbers allotted to the Southland district are from 145-301 to 155-300.
There are 16,000 mo tor-vehicles in the district of which 8400 are on the register at the chief post office, Invercargill. It is suggested that owners should relicense their vehicles early to avoid congestion towards the end of May.
New petrol coupons will be issued to owners of motor-cars and motorcycles on the payment of the 1941-42 relicensing fees, and the coupons now on issue will become obsolete at the end of May, after which they should be destroyed.
