RETIREMENT OF ROYAL CHIEF

MAY CxO to stud in NORTH ISLAND

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, April 26. Royal Chief has been definitely retired from racing, and there is a possibility that he will do stud duty in the North Island. The idea of sending him io The Grange Stud, discussed recently, has been abandoned, as it was considered there were too many Chief Ruler mares in that district. In the meantime he is having an easy time at Mrs J. Campbell’s stable. His owner, Mr A. K. Firth, has not purchased any other horse to replace Royal Chief, and it is probable his colours will not be seen out again, at least for some time.

Iceland Spar has been given two months’ spell, with the run of a paddock during the day time, and it is not intended to put a saddle on him until about July. He will then be started off on a preparation for spring handicaps with the big Cup events in view.

Streamline is progressing satisfactorily, and is to have a race on the flat at Amberley on Saturday. He has not done any schooling since he raced at Easter, but is likely to be tried over steeplechase fences after Amberley. In a gallop last week over seven furlongs, Streamline always had the better of Lockheed, who is recognized as a good track worker. Scarteen, brother to Vintage, is due to make his reappearance at Amberley. He has furnished into a solid gelding in contrast to his earlier conformation, and has been galloping well lately. Sir Frederick Well

Sir Frederick’s win at Greymouth indicated that he is in the right form to tackle jumping races during the winter. He commands more speed than the general run of hurdlers, but suffers from tendon trouble, and this has accounted for his somewhat restricted activity to date. His stable mate Greenbank also recorded an impressive win at Greymouth, and now that he has struck winning form again, he can be expected to earn further distinction during the next few months. Roy Bun won his first race since he won the Greymouth Cup in January on the same course last Monday, He was accepted for in two races on the second day, but was withdrawn from the first, the big handicap, owing to the ground being too soft, as he had proved himself useless in bad going. Against his trainer’s advice, his owner decided that he should fill his second engagement, over seven furlongs, and although a lot of rain fell between the two events, and the track had become very sloppy', the horse revelled in the conditions and won going away. Jewish Lad has resumed work after a spell following his hard racing at the recent Riverton meeting. He was engaged in a hack steeplechase, two miles, on the first day, but was started in the big event in preference, and although running a good second the race took a lot out of him, and he failed later at the meeting. The hack event would have been easy for him. His next attempt over country will probably be at Dunedin. Verlagia, the Southland-owned two-year-old filly by Vermeer from Pelagia, was taken to the Greymouth meeting in the hope that she would show something of the promising form which characterized her early education, but she failed in her two outings. She was given serious tasks early in the season, and promised to be one of the earliest two-year-old winners, but evidently she was started on too soon, and now next season will have to be awaited to sec if she will ever make good.
