CHILDREN BURNED TO DEATH
HAAST PASS TRAGEDY (P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 26. Two children, aged 10 months and two years, the children of Mr and Mrs H. J. Guildford, of the Public Works camp on the Haast Pass road, were burned to death on Thursday evening. Mr and Mrs Guildford left the house to nay a short visit to the camp cook shop. At the time the two children were sleeping in the house and everything appeared to be in order. Shortly after their departure a workman discovered the house to be on fire, but it was burning so fiercely that he was unable to enter. The charred remains of the two children were later recovered. HEAD-ON COLLISION
A head-on collision between a car driven by Alexander Pay, of Otatara, and a car driven by Edward C. Jones, of Riversdale, occurred on the GoreMandeville road between Mandeville and Otamita about 10 o’clock on Thursday night. Although both vehicles were extensively damaged, no one was seriously injured. Charles Pay, a passenger in the car driven by Alexander Pay, suffered cuts about the face and was admitted to the Gore Public Hospital. His injuries are not serious and his condition last night was quite satisfactory.’
BAYONET WOUND IN NECK
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, April 25. While challenging a trespasser near the oil tanks in the early hours of this morning, Private Alexander Burrows, one of the guards of the area, tripped and fell on his bayonet, inflicting a wound in the neck. He was admitted to the Dunedin hospital at 1 a.m. There is no information available as to what happened to the trespasser.
