SECOND DAY AT WINGATUI

Big Handicap Won By Trench Fight SOUTHLAND HORSES’ TWO WINS (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, February 22. Close finishes in several events and fast times generally assisted to produce some excellent sport on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Wingatui today. One track record was broken and in two other instances the times recorded were fractions of a second outside the record. The weather was brilliantly fine and the attendance, which included many Southland sportsmen, was a large one. Southland horses again performed well. Their opportunities were not as numerous as on the opening day but almost without exception they raced well and those who did not win stake money were not disgraced. Royal Lancer continued with the good form he showed on the first day and won the Flying Handicap from a particularly smart field of sprinters. He thus completed a double success for the meeting. Anglo-Irish was Southland’s second winner for the day and Wild Career ran a good third in the Jockey Club Handicap, the big handicap event of the day. Stake money won by Southland horses on Saturday amounted to £5OO and made the total for the two days £l5lO. In all southern horses gained five wins (including the Dunedin Cup), a second and three thirds.

Trench Fight won the Jockey Club Handicap in decisive style at the end of a hard race in which a solid pace was set by Straightdell and Wild Career. Trench Fight was not produced on the first day because of soreness following a training gallop. On Saturday’s form he must have been a hard horse to beat in the Dunedin Cup. The James Hazlett Gold Cup was won by Doria after an interesting race in which four of the five runners had chances of success over the last furlong. Gay Parade made the pace for the first six furlongs, but in the straight the issue was fought out by Doria and Royal Chief, the latter just failing to reach the winner at the post. It was one of the best races in the event for several years. The totalizator for the day handled £34,998 compared with £52,278/10/last year.
