SUPEREX’S TRACK RECORD

Royal Lancer’s Second Success (From Our Special Reporter) DUNEDIN, February 22. Superex put up a track record in winning the Owhiro Hurdles. He was kept behind the leaders for over a mile and on the turn into the straight raced around the field and took the lead before heads were straightened for home. In the run home he held off challenges by Roseman and Donadea and beat Roseman by a neck. Donadea was a length away third and Spendthrift, the favourite, was a length away fourth; then came Flagman and Viking. Combat, the first day winner, was among the last two or three all the way. He did not show the dash which' kept him in front the first day. Master Hotspur made the pace a cracker over the first six furlongs and with Flagman led the field to the far turn. Both Roseman and Donadea ran good races and Spendthrift finished well after drifting in the middle stages. He was third 50 yards from the post, but was headed for the minor money by Donadea. SMART NOVICES Legis, second favourite in the Novice Handicap, attempted to win from end to end, but had to strike her colours to Lady Derby, the favourite, who was suited by the shorter - distance compared with that on the first day. Legis jumped out smartly and at the end of two furlongs she had a two lengths lead from Kohara, Tripalong, Jacksonville and Lady Derby. Lady Derby moved up to the leaders as they raced across the top, but at the straight entrance Legis had a good lead from Lady Derby, with Kohara, Paladeo and Kurawhi next.

. A good finish between the two r leaders saw Lady Derby take the lead J at the distance, but Legis came again and over the last 100 yards there was nothing between the pair. At the post i Lady Derby was the winner by a neck, [ with Paladeo three lengths away in I third place and Kurawhi three lengths further back. Then came Maxina, Ko- ■ hara and Georgia ROYAL LANCER’S DOUBLE By winning the Flying Handicap from 1 a smart field of sprinters, Royal Lancer completed a double success for the . meeting—the only horse to do so—and recorded his seventh win for the season. It was an outstanding performance, as Royal Lancer was faced with more than one challenge at the end of a hard race. He was well placed all the way, but he had to be ridden right out by W. F. Ellis to beat Boloyna, who came I with a great burst over the last fur- j long. | Leighnor and Thermidor were slow away and Nightcalm at once took up the running from Royal Lancer, Silver Streak and Swordstick. Across the top Nightcalm was galloping well out in front of Royal Lancer, with Pleading and Boloyna moving up. Nightcalm held his lead into the straight and Boloyna made a run on the outer. At the distance Royal Lancer ran past I Nightcalm and then ensued an exciting I finish up the straight between Boloyna | and Royal Lancer. The latter responded i under pressure and won by half a head, with Nightcalm third three lengths away; then came Leighnor, Craiglea. Pleading and Spanish Lad. TRENCH FIGHT’S GOOD SHOWING I Wild Career made a bold bid to win the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. He was one of the leading division throughout, and three furlongs from home he took the lead and was going so strongly at the distance that he was being hailed the winner. Trench Fight then made his claim and headed Wild Career, and in a vigorous finish he won by half a length from Schoolgirl, with Wild Career a neck away in third place; then came Knight Commander, Iceland Spar, Doubleack, Mona’s Song and Wardress. Trench Fight put up a great performance. He was in the ruck for a mile and over the last half-mile he put in a sustained run and was third into the straight behind Wild- Career and Straightdell. Schoolgirl finished well to get second money. Knight Commander, who finished fourth, ran in under the w'hip about 30 yards from the post and getting on to the heels of Trench Fight, stumbled I and almost came down. S. Green, the jockey, was dislodged, but made a I wonderful recovery and regained his j seat. Knight Commander was third at the time of the mishap. Doubleack was well placed for about six furlongs but across the top he appeared to get knocked back and at one stage he drifted to third last. He finished strongly, but was unable to make up the leeway over the last furlong. Iceland Spar was one of the early leaders, but faded in the middle stages, and Mona’s Song was never dangerous. Wardress’s chances were spoilt at the start. She got caught in the tapes. SECRET FLIGHT LEFT Secret Flight was a certainty beat in the Abbotsford Hadicap. She was third last way in a straggling start and at the half mile was fully 12 lengths behind the leaders. Once she reached the straight Secret Flight made a pheno- : menal run through the big field and ' passed every horse but the winner. ; Withdrawal was well placed throughout * and won well. King Gustavo and Astaire were the ' first out and Secret Flight, Lawford ' Lass and Big Joe got badly away. Philibun began smartly and raced behind ! the leaders to the half-mile where ! Withdrawal, Islay Downs, Gay Lancer and Queen Beth showed up. King Gustavo and Astaire led the field to the straight where Withdrawal was taken through on the rails and Gay Lancer followed her. Gay Lancer was in front at the distance, but Withdrawal passed him and went on for a comfortable win from Secret Flight, who came from the clouds and beat Gay Lancer by a head for second money. Astaire finished fourth; then came Islay Downs, King Gustavo and Philibun. BIRD OF PREY’S EASY WIN Bird of Prey won the Hopeful Handicap pointlessly from Espionage, Dash o’ Dublin and Desert Maid. She was well placed at the jump out and after half a furlong had been covered, she f took the lead from Dash o’ Dublin. Thereafter she was never headed. Silver Lily was up with the leaders ■ three furlongs from home, but she , drifted before the home turn was J reached and finished last in company with Solerity. Desert Maid was third across the top from Bird of Prey and Dash o’ Dublin, but in the run home Desert Maid weakened and finished fourth. Espionage finished well and got up to beat Dash o’ Dublin for second place by a head. DORIA’S GOLD CUP Royal Chief and Doria fought out a ’ great finish in the James Hazlett Gold 1 Cup, but Doria held on well and at the post had a neck to the good. In another <

iew strides Royal Chief would have passed the winner. The start was a good one in which Lord Nuffield showed out from Doria. After the field had gone a furlong Lord

Nuffield showed the way from Gay Parade, with Doria two lengths away in third place; then came Winning Rival and Royal Chief. At the half mile the positions were unchanged, but across the top Royal Chief moved up and the field bunched. Lord Nuffield was first into the straight and Doria challenged the leader. Royal Chief also put in his claim on the outer and in a stirring finish to the judge, Doria won from Royal Chief by a neck; Winning Rival was third, one length and a-half away, and Lord Nuffield was fourth. The sectional times were: Two furlongs, 26sec; three furlongs, 38sec; half-mile, 50 2-ssec; five furlongs, 62sec; six furlongs, Imin 14 4-ssec. The last half-mile was run in 48 3-ssec. ANGLO-IRISH IMPROVES Southland gained its second win for the day and the fifth for the meeting when Anglo-Irish romped away with the Waihola Handicap. The winner was apparently improved by his gallop on Thursday when he ran third to Sea Lady over a mile. Anglo-Irish won in impressive style and once again demonstrated his ability as a most promising galloper and stayer. He was taken to the front after about a furlong had been covered, and thereafter he was never headed. Along the back Anglo-Irish made a big break on the field and half a mile from home he was clear of Airline by three lengths with another two lengths back to Parlance; then came My Song, Lord Midas and Prince Reunalf. AngloIrish held his advantage into the straight and went on to win comfortably from Parlance who was two lengths clear of Blue Abbey; then followed Airline, Prince Ruenalf, Lord Midas and Foxette. The last-named was the win favourite, but she did not at any stage of the race justify the confidence placed in her. Blue Abbey was slow away and did well to finish third.
