COMPETITION FOR ARCHITECTS
FIRST PRIZE TO AUCKLAND MAN (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 22. The New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal Competition for 1940, judged by a jury appointed by the Royal Institute of British Architects, London, has been won by Mr H. L. Massey, of Auckland. He won the competition for his design of the Wellington Centennial Memorial which marks the site of the first landing of the pioneers at Petone and which takes the form of a hall and bathing sheds. Mr Massey has been successful in numerous competitions, one of his earliest achievements being the winning in 1920 of the first “Daily Mail” competition in housing held in England after the last war. He is a former president of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and yesterday he was elected Dominion president in succession to Mr J. M. Dawson, of Wellington,
