DESERTER ENTERS QUEEN’S ROOMS

LONDON, February 21.

The Daily Mail relates an astonishing incident in which the Queen suddenly found herself confronted in her private apartments by a man suffering from a grievance. He had obtained a job in the Royal household and quickly familiarized himself with the Queen’s apartments, which he entered one evening. “What are you doing here?” the Queen asked. The man then told his story and the Queen listened calmly for 10 minutes, although she could easily have summoned aid. She promised to have the man’s case examined. Steps have since been taken to make a repetition of the incident impossible. Later a young soldier told The Daily Mirror that he wanted the Queen to help him to join the Auxiliary Fire Service. “After deserting and starving for some weeks I went to a labour exchange in the district where their Majesties live and got the job of a fitter’s mate in the Royal household,” he said. “I found out where the Queen’s rooms were and made up my mind to see her. I strolled boldly into her room and knocked.”

The man is now facing his trial on a charge of desertion.
