DEATH OF MAJOR IN EGYPT

(Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, February 23. Major Frederick John Brook, whose death in Egypt on February 19 from pneumonia was officially announced on Friday was, before leaving for service overseas, head master of the Beaumont Public School. He gained his commission as second lieutenant in the Otago Hussars in 1924, and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in May, 1925. He was transferred to the Otago Mounted Rifles, with the rank of captain in 1929, and in 1934 was promoted to major. He left on overseas service in February 1940 with the 26th Rifles Battalion as captain, and while away was promoted to the rank of major. He was a married man with two children and was a most efficient and popular officer.
