Place in a saucepan ej.ght ounces butter, eight ounces brA ( ’u> l sugar one pound elates and half pint warm water. | Bring slowly to the tyoil and simmer ! for about five minutes, stirring all the time to prevent burning. Allow to become quite cold, then add 12 ounces flour, sifted with half level teaspoon ground cinnamon, half teaspoon mixed spice, and a good pinch of salt. Add four ounces shelled walnuts and one teaspoon soda dissolved in one tablespoon boiling water and quarter pint warm milk. Mix well together and bake in a well greased and floured oblong tin, in a moderate oven for about 2i hours. When cold ice with lemon icing and sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
