AVOID WASTE AND HELP WAR EFFORT In these times when waste is even more abhorrent than ever, women are anxious to make use in the home o many things which ordinarily wouia be discarded. Fox- instance, empty tins can be used for preserves sealed wiu* paraffin wax tops, and there are coun - less uses for waste paper. Because of the war, too, there axe a number of food materials no longer procurable. Substitutes have alreadybeen found for these and ingenxous housewives will find more. So that the women of Southland can help each other to save waste ana utilize what they have ixx their country in place of imported f oo ° s ™“ 3 which can no longer be obtained, tne lady editor asks readers to send in recipes and suggestions which she win be glad to publish in this column. These will appear over the name ot tne sender as a guarantee to other rcadc that they are genuine, and in this way many who are anxious to help effort will, in a short time, have ways of doing so in their own homes at no extra trouble and with greater economy. RED CROSS NEWS COMMITTEES ACTIVE This week the depot committee has completed the distribution of sewing and wool for the sewing guilds to begin activities. Will country sub-centres please note that all country parcels will be distributed from the depot on a Wednesday only. This will enable the carriage of all parcels to be made on the one day. Requests must be received not latex' than Monday of each week. . On Thursday morning Captain M. b. Gallaway addressed a meeting of representatives of the Southland centic and the Gore sub-centre, and much ' helpful information was given in the 1 furtherance of Red Cross work. Mi I Gallaway emphasized the necessity of ! all Red Cross organizations being thoroughly efficient and readv fox' any emergency. This week the women of the Waikiwi Committee had charge of the depot. The society desires to thank the following for donations:—Children’s collections (Wainxahaka branch Red Cross) 3/6; Baby McQueen, 2/6; Mr A. McKenzie, Georgetown, 10/-; Mossburn sub-centre, £l5 December contribution and £35 February contribution; Waikiwi committee, £1; Central Red Cross committee, £8; St. Andrew’s Guild, traycloth and table napkins; Mrs Ritchie Crawford, old linen; Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones, linen; Mrs Muirson, books. COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES Waikiwi: A meeting of the sewing guild will be held on Tuesday, February 18, at 2.15 p.m. in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, Bainfield road. All members are asked to be present. Gladstone: A meeting of the sewing guild will be held on Thursday, February 20, at the residence of the secretary, 15 Russell street. Avenal-Northend: Will residents in the district please note that Mrs W. F. Clouston, telephone 764, is now the honorary secretary of this committee, Mrs J. D. Speix's being now engaged in depot routine work. A meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday when all sewing on hand was completed. Central: At a meeting of the committee Mrs A. G. Gardner- was appointed honorary secretary. Sewing was distributed among the members. The winner of the box of chocolates donated by Mrs Todd, is Miss Myra Crawford, Don street.
East Invercargill: At a recent meeting Mrs J. L. Oit was appointed the honorary secretary, in place of Mrs D. K. Toi’rance, who has been appointed to the depot committee. The ladies are busily engaged in sewing pillow cases and draw sheets.
Georgetown: A meeting of fhe committee had been called for Wednesday. February 19, at 2 p.m. in the Georgetown Hall, John street, and would members of the sewing guild please attend.
South Invercargill: The members met on Wednesday evening, at the residence of the secretary, Mrs R. Brownlie, Grace street, when sewing was distributed. A general meeting of all members and friends will be held on Monday, February 24, in the Knox Presbyterian Sunday School Hall at 2.45 p.m. Representatives from the centre will be present and Red Cross matters in general will be discussed MILITARY HOSPITALS The Southland Society has been asked to share in the supply of jam, honey, pickles, biscuits, and eggs, once every two months to the military hospitals at Burnham and Burwood. Contributions will be received at the Red Cross Depot on the last Friday of February. It has been suggested that jam be forwarded in screw-top bottles or tins. If donors will please attach theii' names to bottles, they will be returned from time to time.
