Yesterday was a very busy day at the public counter at the Town Hall when many ratepayers tendered their rate payments. The sum of £4162 was received during the day, bringing the total of the current year’s payments to £63,588 of a levy of £98,247. Reformative Detention George Edward Whitmore, married, chief clerk, Public Works Department, Invercargill, was sentenced to one year and nine months’ reformative detention by Mr Justice Kennedy in the Dunedin Supreme Court for the theft of £593 as a servant and £444, the property of a number of workmen.—Press Association. Inquest Opened An inquest was opened yesterday into the death of Mrs L. B. McGilvray, of 118 Liddel street, whose body was found in the estuary on Sunday. After evidence of identification had been given before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., the inquest was adjourned sine die.
