PLANTING OF TREES ON ROADSIDES

A decision to ask the Southland CoSTity Council to accept the association’s Coronation oaks and to undertake the planting of these trees near main highways in the province was made last night at a meeting of the Automobile Association (Southland). Some time ago the association wrote to the council, enclosing a letter from the Ashburton County Council about the planting of trees on roadsides. A letter was received last night from the Southland County Council, stating that favourable consideration would be given to the proposals in the future. The chairman (Mr M. M. Macdonald) said that the association possessed about 20 Coronation oaks and, if the council was prepared to accept them this would enable a start to be made with the tree-planting programme.
