FATE OF NAZI “ACE” AIRMAN
GOERING SENDS MESSAGE TO R.A.F. (Received February 9, 5.30 p.m.) BERLIN, February 8. Tlie radio announced that Goering, after the death of Major Wieck, a Nazi “ace” airman sent a radio message to the R.A.F., who replied that Wieck was not a prisoner and was not listed among the casualties. Wieck’s machine, according to the announcer, crashed in the English Channel after a dogfight with a lone Spitfire. Another pilot of Wieck’s squadron, who claimed he shot down the Spitfire, reported that Wieck baled out, but rescue launches failed to trace Wieck or his plane. The Bremen radio announced on December 1 that Major Wieck, commander of the Richtofen Squadron, had not returned from an attack against the enemy on November 28, when he achieved his fifty-sixth victory.
