BRITISH STRIKING POWER

(Received February 9, 8.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON,. February 8. Senator Josh Lee, a military committeeman, said the British and Australian successes in Africa, culminating in the capture of Benghazi, . had greatly strengthened the Empire’s position throughout the world. “They have done much to dispel any defeatist attitude in Congress and the country,” he said. “Britain’s brilliant successes demonstrate her terrific striking power once she gets the feel of battle. Mr Churchill warned Mussolini that Britain would smash his Empire to bits if he entered the war. We are now seeing that happening. The African campaign demonstrates that Britain is fully capable of ‘blitzkrieg’ tactics, which will also be used against Continental Europe when the right time arrives.”
