FLEET SHELLS GENOA

BASE HEAVILY BOMBARDED

PROOF OF NAVY'S SUPREMACY

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received February 9, 11 p.m.) LONDON, February 9. An Admiralty communique states that the base at Genoa in Northern Italy was heavily bombarded at daybreak today by British naval forces. Both heavy and light units took part in the bombardment. No details are yet available, but it is understood that the operation was successful. The bombardment shows clearly the complete control of the Mediterranean that has been achieved by the British Fleet. Genoa is the most important commercial city in Italy and is a fortified sea base. It is one of the biggest manufacturing centres in Italy. Genoa has been raided four times by the R.A.F.
