TOWN-COUNTRY TENNIS GAME

CITY PLAYERS PROVE SUPERIOR MIXED DOUBLES MATCHES NOT PLAYED The annual Town " Co ?T tI Xv a ?hooai match was played at the W P courts on Saturday afternoon and was productive of much good tennis. a fell about six o’clock and. prevented the mixed doubles from being P 5 • However, the match must be count as a win for Town. When play ended for the day Town was leading y sets to six and it is most unlikely Country would have captured the six mixed doubles games. , The Town women were definitely superior, winning all but one of the sue singles and the three doubles Mrs , Adams beat Miss R. Wilson, 9-5, in an interesting match. However, Miss wi - son was not seen at her best ana er lack of practice was reflected in nei play. She made many more mistakes than usual and Mrs Adams, although she had to work hard for her win, was superior on the day. In the second women’s singles Miss L. Barrett beat Mrs McLeod in convincing style. Miss Barrett was in top form and gave her opponent little respite. The only Town player to lose her singles was Miss G. Ferguson, who was beaten by Miss K. Horsburgh, 9-6. The young Country player gave a determined display ana thoroughly deserved her success, inis match was characterized by long rallies. Miss Horsburgh is a left-handed ' player and she frequently passed hei opponent at the net with well-directed ' shots. „ | In the top women’s doubles Mrs G. • R. Hanan and Miss Barrett proved too good for Misses Wilson and M. Tippett. ' The country pair lacked combination and consequently the Town playeis were able to find many gaps. > WIN FOR DEAKER 1 A J Deaker put up a fine display to 1 beat B. Whelan, 9-7, 6-4. There were 1 some good driving duels in this match, with Deaker a shade superior. Deaker s placements won him many points. His deep, base-line driving had Whelan on ■ the defensive, and when the latter did - come to the net to finish off a rally he ■ was often passed. Whelan’s play reflected his lack of hard practice ana ■ he was not up to his best form. A. T. Baird proved too good for J. Johnston, winning 6-2, 6-4. Baird’s overhead work was very consistent and any loose i shots were severely treated. F. Lindsay beat G. Barnes in straight sets, his low back-hand drives standing him in good stead. The match between D. Radford and H. Dillon was one of the longest of the day. Radford was brilliant at times and had he not become careless on occasions he might have I won in straight sets. G. Horsburgh played really good tennis to beat J. I Coward, 7-5, 6-2. Horsburgh out- | generalled his opponent and played ! many good forcing shots.
