ON AND OFF THE TURF

PHILAMOR SIRES A JUMPER By SIR MODRED Six mares from New South Wales are at sea on their way to California and two of the number are three-year-old fillies bred in New Zealand. Daughters of Beau Pere the fillies are Bel Amour and Beau Cadeau. During the past few weeks the five-year-old gelding Rarotonga, a son of the Southland sire Philamor, has won three valuable hurdle races in the Auckland province. It is not surprising that a grandson of Son-in-Law should succeed over hurdles as he comes from one of the most enduring sire lines of the world. Rarotonga’s dam was Spare Moment, by Merry Moment (from an English jumping strain) from Melologne, by Advance (a noted performer) from Epilogue, a mare of the family of Red Rose, by Traducer. The retirement from the turf of Ajax calls for a readjustment of the table of the ten leading stake winners of Australasia. The list is headed by Phar Lap (N.Z.), with £66,738, followed by Amounis, £48,297/10/-; Gloaming, £43.100; Ajax, £40.275; Limerick (N.Z.), £38,729/10/-; Heroic, £38,062 10/-; Eurythmic, £36,891; Nightmarch (N.Z.), £32,116/10/-; Windbag (N.Z. dam), £35,939; Peter Pan, £34,938. The dam of Windbag was bred at Oamaru, and the grand-dam of Peter Pan was a Dominion-bred mare by Boniform. Three of the progeny of Iliad won races over the week-end. Evemary scored at Tapanui and Erambie and Lord Midas at Riccarton. Erambie and Evemary are three-year-old fillies. Chokebore Lodge, the establishment presided over by the brother trainers H. and A. Cutts, turned out three winners at Riccarton on Saturday. Two of the number were by the Blandford horse Solicitor-General in Pleading and Bird of Prey, while the third successful galloper was the mare Winning Rival, by Bulanshar and also a son of Blandford. On each occasion the winners were ridden by C. T. Wilson. Promoted to open company and nominated for the Dunedin Cup Iceland Spar is a four-year-old gelding who may stay on. Bred in Australia he was purchased as a yearling in Sydney by F. D. Jones for a Christchurch owner at 220 guineas. His sire, Excitement, was by Hurry On (sire of Hunting Song) from Stefanova, by Stefan the Great (son of The Tetrarch) from Glass Bell, by John o’ Gaunt (a horse from the famous mare La Fleche) from Bellavista, by Cyllene. Iceland Spar’s dam was the English mare Calcite, by Rock Flint from Milanaise, by Marco.
